Edition 34: First Impressions

First impressions don’t begin at the interview table. They start long before, through every piece of your presence.

Think of it as both an opportunity and a reminder: you’re shaping your professional story every time someone looks you up, hears about you, or reads your work.

The way you present yourself online, the reputation you build with others, and the documents you share all add up to the version of you that employers meet before you walk into the room.

Online Presence

For most recruiters, LinkedIn is the first stop. A quick search of your name will bring up your profile before anything else. Your social media presence also contributes to how you’re perceived, even casual posts can leave an impression.

You don’t have to strip away your personality, but make sure what’s visible reflects a version of yourself you’re comfortable with professionally.

Word of Mouth

Your reputation often travels faster than you do. References, mentors, lecturers, and past colleagues all play a part in how you’re spoken about. Even a simple comment like “they were great to work with” can set the tone for how you’re viewed to potential employers.

Every collaboration is a chance to build a potential reference, so treat it as such.

Portfolio & Cover Letter

Before meeting you, many hiring managers will have already formed an impression through your portfolio or cover letter. These documents aren’t just samples of your work, they signal your professionalism, clarity, and effort.

Remember, no matter how much you say “I have great attention to detail,” if they spot a mistake on the very first page of your portfolio, that claim instantly loses weight.

Putting It All Together

First impressions aren't formed in a single moment. They’re formed through a web of touch points. Through online profiles, casual conversations, shared stories, and the work you put forward. Together, they create a story of who you are before you ever sit down in the interview chair.

The Move

This week, check your headshot on LinkedIn or social media. Ask yourself:

“Would I be happy for a potential employer to see this as their very first impression of me?”

If not, update it.

See you next week!
